Closing Date: 18 April 2008

A Macquarie University Research Excellence PhD scholarship is available in the Department of Modern History for a postgraduate student interested in working on the ARC-funded research project ‘From Print to the Internet: The Media in Australia since 1803’. Applicants may have an interest in any aspect of Australian media history. Possible areas of inquiry, hitherto neglected, include the history of: the suburban press in Sydney and Melbourne; the university student media; the media in twentieth-century Victoria; and the Herald & Weekly Times. The successful applicant will also contribute related material to A Companion to the Australian Media, the project’s centrepiece, and be affiliated with the University’s Centre for Media History.

MQRES scholarships are available to domestic or international students. Applicants should have completed an Australian four-year undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline (Modern History, Journalism, Media, Communications or Politics) with first class honours, or be able to demonstrate equivalent research qualifications (such as a Masters degree with a substantial thesis component).

The scholarship pays a living allowance currently $20,007 per annum, tax exempt (2008) and the tenure is a maximum 3.5 years full time subject to satisfactory progress. Tuition fees will be funded for the scholarship tenure with domestic students receiving RTS placement for their research degree tuition and International award holders having their fees sponsored.
