Reconceptualising early mathematics learning: The role of pattern and structure

A Macquarie University Research Excellence (MQRES) PhD scholarship in Education is available in connection with an ARC Discovery project “Reconceptualising early mathematics learning: The role of pattern and structure” awarded to the Centre for Research in Mathematics and Science Education (CRiMSE). The project leaders are A/Professor Joanne Mulligan of Macquarie University and Professor Lyn English of Queensland University of Technology.

The candidate will join a dynamic team of researchers and research students at CRiMSE (for further information on the centre see www.crimse.mq.edu.au). Basic research carried out at CRiMSE has shown that early awareness of pattern and structure is a crucial feature of successful mathematics learning. An innovative approach to teaching and learning mathematics, the Pattern and Structure Mathematics Awareness Program (PASMAP), has been developed on the basis of research findings. The ARC project, which will focus on Kindergarten classes in two schools in Sydney and two schools in Brisbane, will evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of PASMAP. The project outcomes will contribute to a reconceptualisation of early mathematics learning.

The successful candidate will have a strong interest in early learning. A background in mathematics education is preferable, but candidates with a specialisation in literacy, special education or indigenous education may also apply. The research site whilst in Australia need not be located in Sydney or Brisbane.

MQRES scholarships are available to domestic or international students. Applicants should have research qualifications equivalent to an Australian undergraduate degree with first class honours (such as a Masters degree with a substantial thesis component) in a relevant discipline.

The scholarship pays a living allowance, currently $20,007 per annum, tax exempt, and the tenure is a maximum 3.5 years full time, subject to satisfactory progress. Tuition fees will be funded for the scholarship tenure. Additional support for projects and for national and international travel will be available. Limited part-time employment in CRiMSE may also be available.

For further information and discussion regarding the project, candidates are encouraged to contact the Director of CRiMSE, A/Professor Michael Mitchelmore, telephone: +61-2-9850 8655 or e-mail: mike.mitchelmore@mq.edu.au.

Application forms (see below), and conditions for MQRES awards, are available from the Higher Degree Research Office, telephone +61-2- 9850 7987, e-mail: hdrschol@vc.mq.edu.au.
